West Holmes girls will return to state basketball tournament

ZANESVILLE  The West Holmes High girls basketball team is going back to the state tournament for a third straight season.
 
No. 1-ranked West Holmes clamped down on defense in the second half and  rolled to a win over previously undefeated Maysville for the Division II regional championship Friday night.
 
West Holmes (27-0) will play the winner of today’s game between West Branch (23-4) and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary (24-2) in the state semifinals in Columbus at 3 p.m. Thursday.
 
Maysville, ranked at No. 8
 
in the state, ended with a record of 26-1.
 
Emily Molnar was the lone player from either team to reach double figures, leading the Knights with 12. East District Player of the Year Laina Snyder added nine points and 10 rebounds.
 
Maysville led 7-5 after the opening quarter, but West Holmes took a 19-16 advantage at the half. The Panthers led 12-7 before the Knights went on a 9-0 run to go up 16-12 en route to the first-half lead.
 
West Holmes broke open the contest in the third quarter and took a 34-22 lead into the final eight minutes of play.
 
The Knights held the Panthers to one fourth-quarter field goal and 4-of-24 shooting from the field in the second half.
 
Kayla Russell paced the Panthers with nine points.
